FUTURE- Does it happen or do we Make it?

The best way to predict the future is to invent it – Alan Kay

Future, the time period after present…does it happen or do we make it? This is a very contradicting question. Some say future depends on our past activities and some say future holds something better. So what exactly is future all about? It is something which will happen tomorrow, no matter what.

We certainly look at our future and plan it. We know what we will do tomorrow. We plan our tomorrow for our better future, which means we make it. At the same time, we can’t predict future. No matter how much we plan our tomorrow, we can’t control it. Things will happen the way it has to and we cannot change it, as you cannot escape your fate, which means that future happens. So what is it actually?

Future is subjective and varies from person to person. I believe future happens. People can foresee the future only when it coincides with their own wishes. Future is what will happen tomorrow, how much ever we may run from it. Future is unpredictable and unseen. It is tomorrow, which none of us have experienced. We live in present and dream about future. Tomorrow is a mysterious possibility, not yet born. A quote by Douglas Adams " I seldom end up where I wanted to go, but almost always end up where I need to be" describes that even if we plan our future, what is written in our destiny shall happen. Tomorrow is a dream which we cannot touch, but if we follow them, they will lead us to our destiny.

The past gives you an identity and the future holds the promise of salvation, of fulfillment in whatever form. Both are illusions - E. H. CHAPIN

Does Future Happens Or it is Made?

The very first day of this assignment was thinking...and just thinking that does future happens or we make it ourselves.
Ones it seems...we made our future as what we have done today that will decides what will happen tomorrow. It is important to be grounded in the past and to learn from it.Your experiences will always helps you to shape you future in better way.
But what happens is always unpredictable which is beyond human control as natural climates and lots of things which just happens. When we think that we have absolute control on our future it just happens..
So we always try to shape our future by our actions of today and plannings for tomorrow but future is going to happen,no matter what we want to make it.
So future is always mystery for us which we always try to shape in our own way but it still remains mystery for us.

Does future happen or is it made ??

The day when we got this assignment ..was thinking ...and re-thinking...in big dilemma...some time if you look at facts..it seems..we MADE our future on the other hand if we see natural calamities and things which we have never thought of ...made us think that it HAPPENS....due to some chain reaction.

Some people view the future with wishful thinking . Dreams like winning the lottery or sitting in front of Amithab on the HOT SEAT ..and being a milliner in few hours....having house on sea side ...People have loads of dreams & visions of grandeur.

Some questions made us think on above question ...What will happen if we don't Recycle ?, What do you see and what are you doing about this ? , How Ratan Tata , Henry Ford found the future and made it happen ?

Its a big dilemma ....let's being our quest to consider the importance of thinking about our future with the intention of doing something to MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!

Does the future happen or is it made?

The statement, does future happen or is it made is almost like the riddle what came first the chicken or the egg. Everything is certain and uncertain to a degree in these statements. The future is going to happen, no matter what, no matter how, and at the same time what we do
now shapes up our future. Our actions today affect what we are going to do tomorrow. In that sense the future is also made. But this becomes contextually when we look at our selves. I'm more in control of how i would shape up my future than say somebody else. So in my
context it is made and hence it is happening the way i see it would happen. But then there are other parameters which i have no control over. Like me wanting to write this piece sometime back but the festive season was more exciting.

Future, is contextual and subjective. And its probably the one thing that everyone wants to have a vision over. An aspiration, a desire or a pathway of how it would turn out and how they would like to shape it. Ones future is some thing one desires to have as much control as possible. and would love to believe that they are as much in control as possible. Like as i write this i read about Steve Jobs death. A billionaire, who revolutionized technology, altered and designed the future of computers, peoples lives, gave it a certain direction. He changed the way people would look at, listening to music, communicate and design. He changed peoples future and the way things would work. For him, he was in absolute control of his vision for apple. He made his future. But was still not in control, cancer happened. So as much as we feel we make our future, there are elements that make it happen for us.

Hence I feel, t future is made that is why it happens. But also the future happens that is why its made. :)

Design Process: A Reflection

So here we are ...to share our views on Design Process...Reflection on us..from last 3 days study...

* We have started with a very normal product which we used in our day to day life...Handkerchief ...which is now replaced with wet or dry tissues/wipes...which was quite interesting ..and during our presentation we came across with lot of new aspects of a Simple product..from its uses to manufacturing ....different age groups..occasions ...keeping all this in mind we have to create our own product ..which has to be different and have feature so that it can attract its target audience...Brand name to its relation with our product .

*Than we have to create our own class Blog...which was a great idea..to share your point of vies on same topic..and we can access it at our ease ....."why do we need Design ?''...made us re-think about Design ....in our day to day life..how we can make our life simpler with help of design.

*We have to buy product which cost only 10/- RS. , which was real challenge for all of us.....after getting all the stuff ....surprise to see how 10/- is still have so much value and we can get many things with in it...in my case clutch pencil which I've got in 5/- was really amazing .

*Product bought by us ...exchange with each other and told us to re - design the whole concept ,which was quite challenging ..coz that product was as simple as it can be ..in the price range we have bought it.

*On the next day ...we have to subtract or add in the same product ...it was a interesting task....people come up with lot of good ideas.

During our each presentation ..we all came up with good ideas...and we got the opportunity to exchange our ideas and views in the class room.

does the future really HAPPEN?? or is it made???

I have been thinking since the past 2 days,,what is future? tommorrow,,what will happen tommorrow, do we know what will happen today? do we know now, yes to an extent i know now i am sitting on my laptop , breathing, and thinking, would i be doing the same tommorrow, same time, i don't know. But do i know what will happen tommorrow same time? yes the sun will rise aprroximtely same time, there will be noon and dawn, but will there be an earthquake tommorow which will engulf everything that is here today?? i don't know , I am not God. yes but the weather forecast says, all is well! That gives me some consolation.
The dilemma here is perception. But the point of thought is , there are some things which we can control, our internal factors, our thought process , but the external demands more wisdom and, perhaps randomness, it is beyond human control, through my understanding of my past experiences and patterns, there are certainities which one can control and devise a plan for. Based on past experiences and certain things which one assumes and forecasts, but there are also certain things which are random and beyond one's control, a combination and permutation of that will be future.

OUR 3 DayS ExpeRieNce
On the very first we all come in class with very blank thoughts.we were completely unaware about this course and the assignments related to this. Now we came up with our first assignment,we have to find out what will be the better replacement for the handkerchief.
our next assignment was that we have to buy any product worth Rs.10/ only.
During this entire process we came to know the whole criteria that why we need to redesign a product. How we can fulfill the demand of market or users by design. This entire process also helps us to understand individual perspectives of users towards our product so that we can design better products which will make their life easier.

Our 3 Days ExPeRiEnCE!

Yet another Monday morning led us all to the unwanted class. Unaware about the course content and the upcoming assignments, we dragged ourselves to start up with a new module. Design process, as the name suggested, would be something to do with DCC and all that we know. But to our surprise, it was something more than just the name. It was much more interesting, exciting and something to do with our day to day life which we often ignore or take it for granted.

First day started off with simply finding an alternate to a HANDKERCHIEF. We came across various features and aspects which are often ignored. Challenging ourselves and finding out opportunities in the existing design was the task for the day. Grouping ourselves in a group of 4 and then redesigning the same product led us all to healthy discussion, as 15 brains worked together on the same object, with different ideas and perspectives. Creating a Blog and sharing our view points about ‘Why do we need design’ was what we achieved at the end of the day.

Our new challenge for the day was to purchase a product worth Rs 10/- Randomly picked objects was what our forth coming days were based on. Re-designing the same object, keeping the same value was the challenge. The changes brought in the individual objects proved the opportunities in the existing ones. The entire process helped us in understanding individuals’ perspectives and approaches towards coming up with an innovative product which satisfies the consumers’ need and purpose.

Does the future happen or is it made ?

The question of future and Destiny is a very subjective one . It is also one that is debated on very often with both sides reaching no conclusion.

I believe that the future is something that we make ourselves , we make our destiny. There is a chain that leads to the making of our future. The past influences us and brings us up to the present in which events and chain of thoughts leads us to the future .
An example of this would be person XYZ who has everything in life- from cars to money to education , he may have all this , but how he uses it is the way he makes his own future. how he may have achieved it may be relevant or ir relevant but what he does of it is his future .

Many a people plan there future ,
yet one may say that it is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time.So thus planning too much in the future does not necessarily lead to big assets .
Yet WE plan our future which is prone to change constantly according to change in needs and our thoughts of what we may need in year X .

First three days of design process

The first day was quiet interesting as we didn't know what the class was about and what we had to expect from it. We were told to come up with the next best thing to a HANDKERCHIEF. This made us put on our thinking caps and we in groups of 4 started coming up with various ideas that could be the next best thing. It made us realize how much of thought process goes into making one simple product. We came up with a product that was considered by us as one of the ideas that might work. we had to do the branding for the product, sell the idea for a million dollars and also come up with a product for the future.

Then there was this idea of a blog for the class in which we had to write a paragraph on a particular topic given to us. our first topic was " the need for design". This made us think about how and when and where we would use design and who is it that needs design.

Next we were told to buy anything for Rs. 10/-. Something with which we could connect. It was quiet a task as nowadays there is hardly anything that is available for that much of amount. This particular amount was fixed because
- its hardly anything
- you wouldn't think twice to spend that much
- easily available
- product of such less amount is easy to mass produce.

Next day we discussed on Idea of design and we concluded that design was Intentional, Planned, Tangible/Intangible, Creative, Aesthetically Innovative, orderly and much more. A product was chosen ( A bulb in my case) and was told to redesign it and make it user friendly and innovate with the design.

A chart was made which listed the individual parts of the product and also the uses of these parts as to how they contribute in the working of the product.

The chart was presented in the class and discussions were held regarding the product, the research that went through in figuring out the parts and finding out their function and also about how and what can replace these parts with something more user friendly and availability. The whole class discussed their individual products and in the process learnt a lot more than we had imagined with respect to each product.

The need for design

We need design to make one's life simple, uncomplicated and less cluttered. To improve the ease of use of a product we need design. Everything/ everyone around us needs design be it a person , the society he belongs to or the market that caters to both. To meet the requirements of the above mentioned sectors in the most easiest and the best possible way, we need design.

The requirements can be addressed in the best possible way if we create a design keeping in mind the constraint like the cost, the availability of materials, environmental issues etc, the aesthetics of the product, the sale-ability of the product and much more. The challenge here comes when one has to come up with a good design with all the constraints that is being imposed on. Again the process of figuring out how to manage a good design with all the constraints is in itself a design.

So no matter what we do, what limitations we have we always need design to solve our problem.

Future - an important event

What happens is unpredictable, as there is always a chance for a yes or a no.But how one feels, how things fall into place when it is the right time for something, how things just occur the way it is, always has a delicate and more precise planning involved. Why would things happen for a reason,if there was no root cause for which a process had to happen, as a way towards the solution?.......
Like Newton said, every action has an equal and opposite reaction, which is a universal mechanism which has been manifesting itself since the beginning, because the action is the stimulus or the root cause, and the reaction is the well planned response, which will always happen as it is meant to happen. It is a previously proposed law which cannot turn out otherwise.....
Sometimes a mistake is regarded the right answer to a problem even though it was nothing but a natural occurrence. The question to be raised then is, then why did the mistake have to happen..it happened because something that would not have happened consciously had to happen or occur to come out as the right solution..

Things happen for a reason, some sort of planning is obviously evident in the most unlikely of situations, be it consciously or from nature herself..

Does the future happen or is it made?

Does the sea wind just blow or is it the timeless breathing of the sea? Does a tree in the jungle come into being by itself or is it the work of pollination by an insignificant bee?

Sometimes it is said that the future is premediated; that life revolves around Karma or at other times that every action we perform is the result of another perfomed by someone else. Some even go on to to say that the future is neither premediated nor an event that 'happens' but is actually made. There is greater credibility in the latter statement. Since the future reflects the actions of the present and the past it is reasonable to state that the future, though not totally in our hands, is 'made' and not a result of unrelated events. By 'making' our future we do not refer to a future which is crafted soleley to our benefits, aspirations and demands but the fact that the future is a result of decisions and premediated thoughts.

War fashion (which marked many historic changes in the way women dressed) was the result of an ongoing war between nations and the necessity for women to step out and work, in the absence of men. It was a change that was brought about because of certain choices made by the leaders of these nations and a response to changes in society brought about by this war.

Where human human action dictates the future it seems only fitting to say that the FUTURE DOES NOT HAPPEN BUT IS MADE.

What we Learnt from the past three days??
We are started with the objects like hankerchiefs  or paper tissues or wipes. And we gave the presentation which was the group presentation and there were 4 people in each group and we tried to improved the existing product by two to three ideas.

We made a blog so we can share the same thing with the different way about  “ why do we need design?”  and everybody came up with their sense about the design with gave such a nice examples.
In the next day morning we had such a nice introduction which was also the part of the design. And the exercise of purchasing a object up to RS 10/- and everybody picked up the randomly and we analysis that product and re- design the whole product .

DOES THE FUTURE HAPPEN OR IS IT MADE?

“Man is the architect of his own future.”

True?

Well debatable. Another saying might pop into the mind “born with a silver spoon”

Now, which one is true?

Depends. Some make their future by themselves, some are born with it. Let’s take the second case, a man born with a silver spoon. From where did this spoon come?

Yes there lies the crux of the topic. To make the silver spoon, there must have been a lot of effort and planning. Yes, even an inherited future doesn’t come without hard work and to carry it forward, one need to plan and work.

Let us take two examples for the two cases,

  1. Albert Einstein - a boy who failed I college, lost all hopes but went on to become the greatest scientist ever. How? He planned, worked hard and knew what to do. He made his future, if he hadn’t done so, we would still be at least 50 years behind what we are now.
  2. Mukesh Ambani – the best inherited future in India. But the million dollar question is that without proper planning and hard work would his inherited future survive? No, it would have been past.

Even a full fledged mango tree requires proper manure and water; I need not say anything on an inherited multi million.

Future is a mystery …
